ZIG ZAG HOUSE
The ebb and flow of a once natural waterway from Centennial Park passing through the landscape to Botany Bay translates into the dynamic form of Zig Zag House.
Responding to the site condition of a 1 in 100 possible floodplain, the floor level of the home has been positioned at a specific level, and playfully a ‘jetty’ extends into the rear yard. The sculptural roof form floats overhead as if buoyant and suspended by an imagined watery landscape.
A seamless transition between old and new, the pleated ceiling emerges from the existing rooms and develops into a dynamic form indicating the three zones of Kitchen, Dining and Lounge. Like a large palm leaf it provides a deep overhang to the western orientation towards the rear yard. As a key expression of the project, the ceiling was a collaborative journey with the builder, client and design teams to prototype the ribs and construction of such a bespoke gesture.
The internal layout is orchestrated around the client’s collection of artworks and keepsakes, meticulously choreographing the lighting to illuminate these pieces.
