Golf Wang Sydney
2025
Positioned within the Oxford & Foley Development - an FJC designed, TOGA developed and built revitalisation of three city blocks - the Golf Wang Sydney store forms part of the reinvigoration of a cultural precinct in the heart of Oxford Street. The store presents as a bold and highly anticipated offering for fans of US musician Tyler, The Creator, and Sydney’s streetwear culture aficionados.
With flagship stores established in Los Angeles, New York, and London, Golf Wang Sydney marks the brand’s first flagship location outside of the northern hemisphere. Designed by New York based architects 212box, Stukel was engaged as the Local Architect, responsible for overseeing the design development, coordination, approvals processes, construction administration, and the successful delivery of the project.
Located within a heritage listed building, the retail store design carefully balances the preservation of existing heritage elements - including ornate pressed metal ceilings, cornices, friezes, and the original shopfront - with the distinctive design language of the Golf Wang brand. This contemporary language is expressed through a material palette of clean white curved surfaces, concrete, feature birch plywood, and vibrant pops of colour. Integrating this design language into the Sydney context required sensitive detailing, extensive stakeholder collaboration, and clear communication across multiple international time zones.
The opening of Golf Wang Sydney was strategically timed to coincide with Tyler, The Creator’s Australian leg of the 2025 Chromakopia World Tour. Stukel worked tirelessly with the broader project team to coordinate and de-risk the Development Application approvals process, achieving a groundbreaking 36 day DA approval. This was a notable achievement for a Council-owned site (City of Sydney – 99-year lease), located within a Heritage Item and sited in a Heritage Conservation Area.
Working closely with the Builder throughout delivery, Stukel oversaw the production of the store’s hero feature element - a three-metre-tall boxing kangaroo fabricated from solid birch plywood contours. This included assisting with structural integration, fabrication documentation, digital fabrication files, and on-site assembly coordination to ensure the successful realisation of this iconic piece.
Collaborating closely with the Base Building team, retail delivery coordinators, and the Builder, Stukel successfully contributed to the delivery of the tenancy on programme. This enabled Tyler, The Creator to personally visit and launch the store, drawing thousands of fans who lined the footpath for multiple blocks along Oxford Street for the highly anticipated opening event.
